How to become a Cloud Engineer
Overview
Build and run a company's workloads in AWS, GCP, or Azure — design the landing zone, the IaC, and the cost model so engineering teams can ship safely.
Cloud migration and cost-control are now boardroom topics, and the engineer who can design a secure landing zone and defend the bill is hard to replace. BLS projects 15% growth (2024–34) for Software Developers and WEF flags cloud, networks, and cybersecurity among the fastest-rising skills. AI is good at generating IaC and explaining services; the engineer still owns the architecture, the security boundary, and the cost trade-off.
What AI changes
What AI accelerates
First-pass Terraform / CloudFormation modules, service documentation summaries, runbook drafts, and explaining unfamiliar managed services.
What stays human
Landing-zone and account-strategy design, security and IAM boundary decisions, cost-vs-performance trade-offs, and upgrade-path ownership.
AI drafts Terraform, summarises service docs, and proposes architectures — but the cloud engineer's value is in choosing the right landing zone, designing the security boundary, defending the cost trade-off, and owning the upgrade path. The routine IaC and explainer work get faster; the architectural and cost judgement compound.
Day to day
Design and maintain landing-zone accounts and networks, write and review Terraform, harden IAM and KMS, optimise cost and right-size workloads, support engineering teams shipping to the platform, and partner with security on guardrails.
Core skills
- One major cloud (AWS, GCP, or Azure) — services, IAM, networking
- Infrastructure as code (Terraform or Pulumi)
- Containers and Kubernetes
- Cloud cost management and FinOps basics
- Security baseline (IAM, KMS, network segmentation)
Tools
- AWS, GCP, or Azure (deep in one)
- Terraform or Pulumi
- Kubernetes (EKS, GKE, AKS)
- Python or Go for tooling
- Datadog, CloudWatch, or Grafana
- FinOps tooling (Cloudability, Vantage, native cost explorer)
How to get in
Entry routes
- From a systems administration role with a Terraform / cloud-cert upskilling path
- From a DevOps or backend engineering role moving into platform ownership
- From a network engineering role expanding into cloud networking
- From a CS degree with a strong cloud / IaC internship
Certifications
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect — Associate / Professional
- Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert
- HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate
- Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)
Seniority ladder
| Level | Title | Experience | Focus | Salary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | Junior Cloud Engineer | 0–2 yrs | Maintaining IaC modules, supporting account hygiene, learning the platform | Entry of the US band, below the role median |
| Mid | Cloud Engineer | 2–5 yrs | Owning a landing-zone area, leading cost and security improvements | Around the role median |
| Senior | Senior Cloud Engineer | 5–8 yrs | Architecture decisions, multi-account strategy, mentoring | Upper end of the US band |
| Architect/Staff | Cloud Architect / Staff Platform Engineer | 8+ yrs | Enterprise landing-zone strategy, multi-region and multi-cloud standards | Above the senior band, with an architectural-leadership premium |
