How to become a Demand Planner
Overview
Forecast what customers will buy so the supply chain buys the right amount and the business does not run out of stock or cash.
Inventory costs are visible on every balance sheet, and AI has raised the bar on forecast accuracy — demand planners now own the integration between statistical models and real-world market signals.
What AI changes
What AI accelerates
Time-series forecasting, outlier detection, safety stock calculation, and consensus forecast aggregation.
What stays human
Incorporating qualitative market intelligence the model cannot see, reconciling conflicting signals from sales and marketing, and presenting the forecast story to leadership with a clear confidence range.
AI runs statistical forecasts, detects demand signal shifts from POS and web data, and suggests safety stock adjustments; your ability to incorporate what the model cannot see — a sales promotion, a competitor move, a customer's budget cycle — and defend the forecast to stakeholders is where the role holds its value, and that gets more important as models get more complex.
Day to day
Run statistical forecast models, collect demand signals from sales and marketing, reconcile the consensus forecast, flag significant variance to plan, and present the forecast to the S&OP meeting.
