How to become a Network Engineer
Overview
Design and run the connectivity a business sits on — keep the LAN, the WAN, the VPN, and the cloud peering fast, secure, and explainable when it isn't.
SD-WAN, zero-trust, and cloud-first architectures pushed networking out of the closet and into the security and platform conversation. BLS projects 9% growth (2024–34) for Computer Systems Analysts and WEF lists networks/cybersecurity among the fastest-rising skills. AI is good at correlating logs and suggesting first-pass changes; the engineer still owns the design, the change window, and the call when a routing change takes a region down.
What AI changes
What AI accelerates
First-pass config diffs, packet-capture summarisation, log correlation, runbook drafts, and explaining unfamiliar vendor behaviour.
What stays human
Topology and segmentation design, change-window judgement, zero-trust and security trade-offs, and on-call command during real outages.
AI correlates flows, drafts first-pass config diffs, and summarises packet captures — but the network engineer's value is in the topology design, the change-window judgement, the security trade-offs in a zero-trust rollout, and the call under pressure during a routing incident. The routine config and triage get faster; the architectural judgement compounds.
Day to day
Design and review network changes, run packet captures to diagnose intermittent issues, manage firewall and VPN rules, monitor capacity and latency, automate repetitive config with scripts, and partner with security and cloud on segmentation and peering.
Core skills
- Routing and switching (BGP, OSPF, VLANs)
- Firewalls and zero-trust segmentation
- Cloud networking (VPC, transit gateway, peering)
- Packet capture and protocol-level troubleshooting
- Network automation and scripting
Tools
- Cisco / Juniper / Arista hardware and IOS
- Fortinet, Palo Alto, or Cisco firewalls
- AWS / Azure / GCP networking (VPC, transit gateway, ExpressRoute)
- Wireshark and packet analysis
- Ansible or Python for network automation
- Meraki / SD-WAN platforms
How to get in
Entry routes
- From a NOC or systems administration role with a CCNA upskilling path
- From a tier-2 IT support role that owned VPN and Wi-Fi tickets
- From a community-college or university networking programme
- From an internal transfer in a regulated industry where networking is a separate team
Certifications
- Cisco CCNA
- Cisco CCNP Enterprise
- AWS Certified Advanced Networking — Specialty
- Juniper JNCIA
- Palo Alto PCNSA
Seniority ladder
| Level | Title | Experience | Focus | Salary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | Junior Network Engineer / NOC Engineer | 0–2 yrs | Monitoring, ticket triage, basic config changes, learning the topology | Entry of the US band, below the role median |
| Mid | Network Engineer | 2–5 yrs | Owning a region or service, change management, automation | Around the role median |
| Senior | Senior Network Engineer | 5–8 yrs | Architecture decisions, multi-site design, mentoring, vendor management | Upper end of the US band |
| Architect/Lead | Network Architect / Lead | 8+ yrs | Enterprise topology, zero-trust strategy, cross-team standards | Above the IC band, with an architectural-leadership premium |

Outlook
US Computer Systems Analysts employment is projected to grow 9% (2024–34), about three times the 3% all-occupation average; networking demand is shifting from data-centre to cloud and zero-trust segmentation, where the senior premium has widened.
